9/16 of SACC CR Open 2024
Today’s matches delivered two major surprises in both the men’s and women’s draws, alongside intense and emotional battles that kept the crowd on edge.
In the women’s draw, young English talent Amelia Haworth pulled off a huge upset by defeating Seed No. 7 Lucia Bautista, a well-known player in the region, in a thrilling 3-2 match, securing her spot in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Seed No. 3 Alex Haydon, a familiar face from last year’s tournament, was taken down by Colombia’s Catalina Pelaez in a hard-fought 3-1 victory.
The men’s draw featured another English underdog, Samuel Osborne Wylde (world ranked 161), who caused a stir with a decisive 3-0 win over Colombia’s Andres Herrera (world ranked 93). Colombia’s Matias Knudsen, who’s been on a hot streak this season, also shook up the tournament by delivering a clear 3-0 victory against Seed No. 6 Ivan Perez of Spain.
The crowd witnessed an emotional match between the Enriquez brothers, meeting on the SACC courts once again after last year’s memorable encounter. In the longest match of the day, Josue Enriquez ultimately prevailed with a 3-1 score, earning his place in the quarterfinals.
Another gripping match came from Ukraine’s Alina Bushma and Mexico’s Sarahi Lopez, two players known for their similar powerful style, with both favoring hard-hitting shots. The game was marked by multiple collisions as they fought for every point, one of which led to an arm injury for Bushma. Despite the setback, she managed to recover and continued, ultimately securing a hard-fought 3-1 win over the determined Lopez.
It was a day full of surprises and drama, with plenty of excitement in store as the tournament heads into the next rounds.
